“Between the innocence of boyhood and the dignity of manhood, we find a delightful creature called a boy....A boy is truth with dirt on its face, beauty with a cut on its finger, wisdom with bubble gum in its hair and the hope of the future with a frog in its pocket.” - Alan Beck
For some, bubble gum is one of the many symbols of childhood - candy that you couldn't just (not) eat, but also play with. Although not always pink today, precedent from the past has cemented its place in modern illustrations of gum, along with its association with other bright and fun colours.
Through my experimentation, I wanted to play with motion and colour, and the idea of tapping into nostalgia to make gum come "alive". in a literal and figurative sense.
I thought my final project, trading cards, would be fitting because trading cards are also a stereotypical staple of childhood. I tried combining different and interesting characters with the cards in order for the collection to seem varied and appealing to children.
